What GEO Is and How to Improve Your Ranking on AI Search Engines

For years, ranking well on Google was synonymous with being found. That’s still true, but it’s no longer the whole story: more and more people are searching for answers directly in AI tools — ChatGPT, Google’s AI summaries, and other similar assistants — instead of clicking through a list of results. If your business isn’t optimized to also show up in those answers, you’re missing out on a growing share of searches.

What GEO is

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the equivalent of SEO, but built for generative search engines — AI systems that don’t return a list of links, but a direct answer, sometimes citing sources, sometimes not. The goal of GEO is that, when someone asks an AI something related to what your business offers, your brand has a better chance of being mentioned or recommended in that answer.

How it’s different from traditional SEO

Traditional SEO is optimized mainly so a search algorithm understands what your page is about and ranks it well in a list of results. GEO has a different goal: getting a language model to understand, summarize, and cite your content as part of a generated answer, not a list of links. This means working your content to be clearer, better structured, and more verifiable — with concrete data and direct answers — so it’s easier for an AI system to “cite.”

Why it doesn’t replace SEO, it complements it

It’s not about choosing between SEO and GEO. Most traditional Google searches still exist, and many AI tools also use search results as a basis for their answers — so good SEO remains, in many cases, a necessary foundation for good GEO. The difference is that GEO adds an extra layer of work specifically aimed at how AI systems process and cite information.

What it means in practice

  • Clear, well-structured content with direct answers to concrete questions (not just generic paragraphs).
  • Verifiable, specific information, instead of vague claims.
  • Semantic structure that makes it easier for an AI system to understand what each section of the content is about.

The expected result

Your business increases its chances of showing up as a mentioned option when someone asks an AI tool something related to what you offer — a discovery channel that’s just getting started, and one the businesses that work on it early are going to benefit from first.
