Local SEO vs. National SEO: Which Is Right for a Small Business
Before investing in search ranking, it’s worth settling a basic point: does your business compete locally (a specific area or city) or nationally/regionally? The answer completely changes which SEO strategy makes sense.
What local SEO is
Local SEO is aimed at getting found by people searching for a service in a specific geographic area — typical for businesses with a physical location or a limited coverage area, like a neighborhood real estate agency, a city accounting firm, or a shop with its own storefront. It includes working on your Google Business Profile listing, local reviews, and content aimed at geographically-intentioned searches (“near me,” “in [city]”).
What national SEO is
National SEO aims to rank for searches with no geographic limit, competing against any business in the country (or even the region) that offers something similar. It’s the typical case for an e-commerce business that ships nationwide, or a SaaS with no geographic restriction on use.
How to know which to prioritize
- If your business depends on people physically visiting a location, or on a limited coverage area (like delivery or on-site services in a certain zone), local SEO should be the priority.
- If your product or service can be sold or delivered no matter where the customer is, national SEO makes more sense as the main focus.
- Many businesses need a combination of both — for example, a company with offices in one city that serves customers nationwide.
Why mixing both without a clear priority doesn’t work well
Trying to rank at the same time, with the same intensity, for both local and national searches with no order of priority tends to dilute your effort. It’s more effective to define which is the main focus based on your business model, and treat the other as secondary when relevant.
The expected result
A ranking effort focused on the type of search that actually brings you customers — avoiding wasted effort competing for national searches when your business depends on geographic proximity, or vice versa.
