How to Recover Abandoned Carts with Automation
An abandoned cart isn’t necessarily a lost sale — often it’s a sale that simply didn’t get the final push. The person got distracted, had doubts about shipping, or meant to come back later and forgot. The problem is that, without follow-up, that cart just sits there, with no one doing anything to recover it.
Why manual follow-up doesn’t work here
Manually following up on abandoned carts doesn’t scale: it would mean someone reviewing, one by one, who added products and didn’t complete the purchase, and writing to them personally. In an e-commerce business with more than a handful of daily sales, that’s simply not viable. Without automation, the result is that most abandoned carts get no follow-up at all.
How an automatic recovery flow works
- Abandonment detection — the system automatically identifies when someone added products to their cart and didn’t complete the purchase within a set time.
- First contact — an automatic message (by email or WhatsApp) reminding them about the cart, usually a few hours after abandonment, without being immediate or pushy.
- Second contact — if the person still hasn’t bought, a second message can offer concrete help (resolving a doubt, confirming availability) instead of just insisting.
- Flow closure — if after the defined attempts the person doesn’t respond, the flow closes automatically, without continuing to insist in a way that feels annoying.
What to keep in mind for it to work well
- Timing matters — a message that’s too immediate can feel pushy; one that’s too late loses effectiveness.
- The message content needs to add something, not just remind them “you forgot something in your cart” — mention the specific product, address a common objection (shipping, warranty), or include an incentive if it makes sense for your business.
- Set a contact limit — so it doesn’t feel like the system won’t stop insisting.
The expected result
Not every abandoned cart gets recovered, but an automatic follow-up flow systematically recovers a share of the sales that, with no contact at all, would have been lost outright. It’s one of the automations with the most direct relationship between implementation effort and impact on sales.
